It is an ancient maritime tradition and perhaps one of the most heartfelt events of the summer.
Saturday 13 July 2024, once the Holy Mass is over, the Madonnina is transferred from the small church overlooking the sea, and the procession towards the thousand-year-old cathedral begins. When the statue of the Madonna enters Piazza Vescovado the Bell Tower "lights on fire" to greet her. Naturally it is not a real fire but the bell tower is colored with fireworks to remember the fire that had destroyed the Sanctuary on the sea and the statue of the Madonnina in 1923. The effect is wow, very characteristic and every year it leaves you speechless open to faithful and tourists. With the fiery red bell tower, the Madonna enters the Cathedral, amidst the prayers and songs of the faithful and is hoisted onto a pedestal which is positioned inside the central nave, just a step away from the entrance. Between Saturday and Sunday the statue of the Madonna is made the object of the prayers of the faithful's supplications.
The next day, the Madonna dell'Angelo will return to her home, the sanctuary on the sea. After the holy mass in the cathedral, the statue of the Madonna dell'Angelo will cross the exit and to greet her, the bell tower will "set on fire" again.
Meeting on Saturday 13th July 2024 and Sunday 14th July 2024 in Piazza Vescovado after the Holy Mass at 9pm.
Suggestive event not to be missed!
